The new Skype update for Windows has officially arrived. Skype 5.8 allows users to make 1080p HD video calls. Plus, the new version of Skype syncs up with Facebook seamlessly. So, users can video chat in HD with their friends on the social networking site, even if their friends don’t have Skype. And Skype 5.8 users can even instant message their friends on Facebook. If you’re tired of the grainy video quality of video calls on Skype, this is the update you’ve been waiting for.

Skype 5.8 also allows you to share your whole screen with a group of people in a Skype group chat. However, this feature is only available to users who pay a little extra for the premium version of Skype. And, unfortunately, you won’t be able to take advantage of the new Skype HD video call option unless you have an HD webcam and a high-speed internet connection. So, your Facebook video calls may still look a little grainy, if your personal collection of gadgets isn’t super up-to-date.

The new Skype update is only available for Windows PC users to download. There’s speculation that Skype will soon be updating its versions for Mac computers, smartphones, and tablets to include the HD video call option and improved video calls on Facebook. However, Skype has not made any official announcements about these updates. If you have the right kind of webcam, computer, and internet connection, it seems totally worth it to update Skype on your computer. Why wouldn’t you want to video chat with your friends in high definition?

Wow 1080p now. Do people even have enough upload bandwidth for this? Usually the upload bandwidth is capped way too low, unless they have some ninja compression going on. The lighting will still suck anyways haha.

Finally. It’s been a long time coming, 1080p HD for Skype video calls. It really sucks that you need an HD webcam to take advantage of the HD. Oh well, it’s a start.
