You’ve probably seen the commercial from the Nikon line of long zoom cameras starring Ashton Kutcher. The commercial does a pretty convincing job of showing how the Nikon S900, L120, and P500 cameras all capture clear, crisp images of subjects that are far away. As a consumer, you may be wondering how impressive these long zoom cameras actually are. We’ve tried out one of the cameras, the L120, and are awestruck by its zoom capabilities. We also wrote a recent post comparing the Nikon D7000 vs. Canon 7D.

Here’€™s what you should know about this easy to use digital camera:

For a point and shoot camera, the Nikon COOLPIX L120 sure looks and feels like a DLSR. However, it’€™s a bit on the small side, which is actually a good thing for most of its users. The Nikon COOLPIX L120 combines a simple, compact aesthetic with superior functionality for its price. This popular mid-level digital camera with viewfinder can do a lot, from recording your HD movies to automatically correcting red-eye. What really makes this camera stand apart from other cameras for sale in its class, however, is its optical zoom prowess.
The average entry-level point and shoot camera comes with 5x optical zoom, which is good for zooming in on people’s faces when a photographer is a relatively short distance away. 10x optical zoom is what many of the cameras in the COOLPIX L120’€™s price range come with, and this degree of optical zoom might allow you to focus in on a bird in a tree and photograph a relatively clear image of the bird. A camera with 21x optical zoom, however, allows you to take a clear picture of your favorite football player from your seat at the top of the stadium. In fact, with 21x optical zoom, you can produce a crisp digital picture of something that’€™s up to around a fourth of a mile away.

So, the Nikon COOLPIX L120 can take pictures of subjects that are pretty far away, but that€’s not all its 21x optical zoom allows it to do. It can record videos of things that are happening up to around a fourth of a mile away from the photographer. So, it’s an ideal camera to bring with you to sports events, graduations, and concerts.

The COOLPIX L120’€™s incredible zoom capabilities, decent 14.1 megapixels, HD video recording options, wide angle lens, and efficient digital rangefinder are enough to convince many consumers that it’€™s one of the best digital cameras in its price range. Of course, the COOLPIX L120 isn’t perfect. If you’€™re looking for a camera that allows you to control things like aperture and shutter speed, the COOLPIX L120 may not be a good fit. Additionally, it’€™s not the best camera to use when you’€™re taking pictures in low-light settings. As long as you use the attached camera flash, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem, though.

It is all about zoom. I think they are the leaders in that functionality.

I like a smaller camera and the zoom looks promising.

This sounds like the camera for me. I take a lot of pictures that require a good zoom, and this sounds like it fits that description. Plus I like that it is point & shoot, easier for me to use.
