gGadget > Kinect for Windows Launches February 1, 2012
Kinect for Windows launches tomorrow. This sensor will allow users to interact with their computers through motion and speech. Kinect for Windows will work pretty much the same way Kinect for Xbox works. The Kinect for Xbox is intended to allow users to play games and use apps without having to use a controller, and the Kinect for Windows is intended to allow users to play games, use apps, and perform other computer-related tasks without having to use their keyboard or mouse.
Some tech savvy folks have already been using the Kinect for Xbox on their computers. However, Microsoft asserts that the Kinect for Windows will be a much more effective device for users to interact with their PCs, since it is designed specifically for PC use. In fact, the Kinect for Xbox isn’t covered under Microsoft’s warranty if you use it with your computer.
Microsoft anticipates that several applications will be developed to work with the Kinect for Windows. Users will be able to create their applications for the Windows Kinect sensor using the Windows Software Development Kit. Many people have developed apps and games for business, educational, and even medical purposes using the Kinect for Xbox. Microsoft anticipates that the Kinect for Windows will similarly be a major catalyst for independent app and game development for Windows computers.
This new Kinect sensor will be sold for $249.99. Kinect for Windows will work with Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers. We can expect developers to release several apps that are compatible with Kinect for Windows shortly after its official release.

I didn’t know they were releasing a Kinect for computers and I would think about purchasing this. I haven’t purchased a game system since my son was young and to have the option of just buying the Kinect for already existing computers is wonderful. I hope the Dance games will also be compatible with this; they’re great fun!

I recently received the Kinect completely free from an incentive reward site. It only required 11 credits which i was able to get in a few days. Great fun, and i am looking forward to trying it out thro my PC.

Kinect for Windows is a great idea! It should be a lot of fun for the family. I expect to see many YouTube videos in the next year showing the different ways people can use Kinect for Windows beyond the intended purposes.
